Meet our new intern

AAJA-HQ This month at AAJA-HQ, we welcomed a new spring 2023 intern: Aorui Pi. Read more about her below:

Aorui Pi is a journalism graduate student at the University of Southern California. Originally from China, Aorui brings a unique perspective to her work as an international student in the United States. Aorui has a passion for news production and multimedia journalism, with a particular interest in covering international news. Prior to starting her graduate studies, she co-founded a Mandarin media platform at Syracuse University and gained valuable experience working at local TV stations.

report Digiday’s recent survey of publishers’ diversity profiles reveals a lack of diversity across eleven companies. The report breaks down the data for all employees and leadership positions.

AAJA in the media Jeong Park and Calvin Alagot recently spoke to AAJA’s USC student group as part of Annenberg’s weeklong “Hear Us” conference. Park spoke about covering the Monterey Park shootings in January, while Alagot discussed how coverage of communities of color can improve.

media collaborations The Center for Community Media’s Asian and Black Media Initiatives are collaborating to further Asian American and Black community media journalists’ coverage of gender-based violence in their communities. Later this year, they will publish a resource guide with tipsheets, reporting tools and more. 

AAPI history “Free Chol Soo Lee,” a documentary detailing the life of Chol Soo Lee, a Korean immigrant wrongfully convicted of murder in San Francisco in the 1970s, premiered on Monday, April 24.

N3Con Nobel Prize laureate Maria Ressa will speak at AAJA-Asia’s New.Now.Next Media Conference (N3Con) this summer. Get your early bird tickets for the conference in Singapore by Sunday, April 30.
